Field Forum - Breaking STEM Stereotypes: Discussion and Planning
Description
Afterschool programs offer a unique opportunity for youth to engage in and identify with STEM in diverse ways, which is especially important for young women and youth who have been historically excluded in STEM and who face multiple barriers to STEM participation. This interactive discussion will focus on strengthening afterschool programs’ efforts to counter persistent stereotypes about STEM, STEM careers, and STEM professionals.
Participants will learn strategies for making afterschool STEM opportunities accessible and equitable, grounded in the Access to STEM Framework. Participants will learn about activities, approaches, and resources to implement with youth that focus on creating meaningful conversations about equity. Through large group and small group discussions, participants will also have the opportunity to learn from one another’s experiences and develop a short-term plan for their own practice
